Rostering Success Story

Baltic Diesel modernises workforce planning as operations scale

The background

As demand across mining, resources and utilities continues to grow, Baltic Diesel, part of the wider Baltic Group, identified the need to strengthen how work was planned, coordinated and communicated across crews. With expanding project workloads and a growing workforce, Baltic Diesel partnered with Cru Software to replace spreadsheet-based rostering with a more structured, automated approach built for heavy-industry operations.

The challenge

Baltic Diesel supports clients with off-site equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, shutdown support and complete equipment rebuilds. As project volumes increased, workforce planning became more complex:

  • Rosters were managed primarily in Excel, creating manual effort and risk
  • Visibility across fixed and rolling project work was limited
  • Planners and supervisors spent increasing time coordinating changes
  • Workers relied on fragmented communication for roster and job details
  • Compliance, fatigue and competency tracking required additional checks
The business recognised that these constraints would intensify as operations continued to scale.

Why Cru Software

A key factor in Baltic Diesel’s decision was partnering with a provider that understands the realities of heavy-resources operations and has a strong local presence in Mackay. Cru Software’s experience supporting mining, energy and industrial service organisations gave Baltic Diesel confidence the platform could support both current operations and future growth.

CRU Rostering laptop and iphoneThe Solution

Baltic Diesel has commenced implementation of CRU Rostering, focusing on simplifying planning, improving visibility and reducing administrative load.

The solution enables Baltic Diesel to:

  • Transition from Excel-based rostering to a centralised, automated platform
  • Improve visibility across fixed and rolling project rosters
  • Reduce manual coordination for planners and supervisors
  • Provide workers with a single mobile app for rosters, travel and job details
  • Strengthen compliance, fatigue and competency management across sites

The rollout is designed to support both day-to-day operations and the variability that comes with project-based work.

Early Impact

By introducing a structured rostering model, Baltic Diesel is laying the foundation for more consistent workforce planning, clearer communication with crews and improved operational control as project demand fluctuates.

As our operations continue to expand, we knew it was time to move on from spreadsheets and adopt a system that gives us clearer visibility and more control. Working with a company that understands our industry and has a presence here in Mackay made the decision even easier.” Todd Saron, Director – Baltic Diesel

Looking Ahead

As implementation progresses, Baltic Diesel will continue transitioning crews onto the platform, supported by a rostering approach designed to scale with the business. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to modernising workforce operations and supporting safe, efficient delivery across the heavy-resources sector.

From our early conversations, it was clear the Baltic Diesel team wanted a smarter, cleaner way to plan work and support their crews. We’re looking forward to helping them build a rostering approach that grows with their business.”
Elisha Rogers, Business Development Manager – Cru Software
